The Trend Setta is here to provide you with a reference point regarding the world of modelling, it’s major news, big updates and all the other important stuff which follows this exciting industry around the globe.
The modelling industry has been in existence in it’s current form for a little less than 100 years – one of the bigger agencies still in existence now and one of the first in the United States is the Powers Modelling Agency, a huge operation which dates back to the 1930s. Yet another landmark is the rise of the supermodel, a phenomenon which appears to have arisen in the 1960s and which emanated from London, arguably the epicentre of global fashion in that era. Twiggy (Lesley Hornby) is one model put forward as the world’s first supermodel.
The history of the modelling industry is a separate one from that of the history of fashion and it’s important to make the distinction between the two. While one can date ‘fashion’ and clothing trends back 1000 years or more in the West and far longer in other, older cultures, the modelling industry is a relatively recent phenomenon and one that comes hand in hand with the need to market a product.
But how do some models become such superstars? Why does the ability to look pretty and walk up and down in straight line confer such a status on the person doing it? Of course not every single one makes it to such an exalted status, the vast majority do the everyday modelling business without ever making it into the limelight but always hoping that they may make the next step up.
